Who or what is Grow Regina?

Grow Regina is a volunteer group operating under the authority of The Regina Food Bank (formerly the Regina and District Food Bank Inc.).  The name Grow Regina is registered and owned by The Regina Food Bank, Grow Regina exists to operate and promote gardens as a healthy source of fresh vegetables and a place where people come together to build community.

Why are the new gardens named the YARA-Grow Regina Community Garden?

In November of 2007, YARA Belle Plaine, formerly known as Saskferco Products Inc., committed $50,000 towards helping offset the capital cost of establishing the gardens. By including Yara in the name we are recognizing the company’s generous contribution. Located near Belle Plaine Saskatchewan, Yara is one of the newest nitrogen fertilizer plants in North America and is proud to hold the current status as an industry leader in the introduction of nitrogen fertilizer products. In addition to being an industry leader, Yara prides itself on being a leader in the community and is proud to be the title sponsor of the YARA-Grow Regina community gardens.

Who owns the land on which the new gardens will sit?

McLeod Park is owned by the City of Regina and we are thankful to the City for leasing it to The Regina Food Bank on behalf of Grow Regina.

How do I find the Yara-Grow Regina Community Garden?

YARA-Grow Regina Community Garden is located in McLeod Park at 3500 Queen Street adjacent to Saint Marks Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lakeview.

How do I rent a garden plot?

Anyone 16 years of age and older may submit an online YARA-GRCG Garden Application; the YARA-GRCG Orchard Application must still be printed and submitted by mail. It is important to read and understand the guidelines prior to submitting an application. Renewing YARA-GRCG applications are accepted between March 1st and March 31st; NEW YARA-GRCG applications are considered until May 31st or until all current space has been assigned. If no space is available, your application will be added to a waiting list and your money will be refunded.

How big are the garden plots and how much are they to rent?

Mini - 10′x10′ garden plot cost is $11 per year
Small - 10′x20′ garden plot cost is $22 per year
Standard - 20′x20′ garden plot cost is $44 per year
Extra Large - 20′x30′ garden plot cost is $66 per year

NOTE: The number of extra large plots is limited and only available for renewal by currently assigned gardeners. Upon surrender, Grow Regina intends to breakup the extra large plots into smaller plots to respond to demand for gardens.

What is the garden plot assignment criteria?

Consistent with Grow Regina’s previous practices and its obligations under both its Lease and the Community Garden Policy, Grow Regina membership is open to all residents of Regina with membership being confirmed through the rental of a garden plot and/or orchard plot. Garden plots are allotted on a first-come, first serve basis with priority given according to the following order:

• Returning gardeners who sign up and pay their fees by March 31st of each year.
• Individuals without a garden at home
• Those with special needs
• Requests for smaller plots or those sharing a plot
• All other requests
• Lakeview area residents

When will I know if I have a community garden plot with Grow Regina?

Grow Regina only accepts applications for the community garden located at 3500 Queen Street. For contact information to other community gardens in Regina offered through City of Regina Zone Board Programs, please refer to the bottom right side of the screen under “Other Community Gardens” in the green column.

1. All YARA-GRCG Garden Applications are to be processed via the internet; if a gardener does not have access to a computer please call Grow Regina at 352-4813 to have an application form mailed to you.
2. Renewing gardeners have from March 1st until March 31st to register for a 2010 garden plot and make request for either the same plot and a one-time option to either upgrade to a larger plot or down size to a smaller plot before NEW gardeners will be assigned a plot;
3. New YARA-GRCG Garden Applications are considered until May 31st or until all garden plots have been assigned. Plots for new 2010 applications will not be assigned until all 2009 renewal application requests received are completed;
4. If any application cannot be assigned a plot for 2010, all payments received will be refunded;
5. Any cancellation requests from 2010 applicants must be received in writing or email to Grow Regina by midnight of May 15th, in order to receive a full refund of any fees paid. Any requests after May 15th will not be refunded;
6. Finally, any plot assignment will not be considered until Grow Regina has received an application and payment in full for the 2010 garden fee - it is suggested that payment be sent to Grow Regina on the same date the application is made;

How do I learn more about Orchard at YARA-GRCG?

Space is available in the YARA-GRCG Orchard for approximately 10 more trees applications.  In 2010, approximately 126 various fruit bearing native species will be planted this spring as part of the Evergreen Community Greening Project : Buffalo Berry, Cranberry, Saskatoon, American Plum, Pincherry, Haskap, Hybrid Cherry, Hazel Nut and Crab Apple.  These trees will be available as part of an Adopt-A-Tree program later in the season.

1. To reserve a New tree space at a onetime cost of $50.00. Cost provides for registration, hole preparation, top soil, water, and mulch. Cost of tree is not included. Note: One application form is required for each tree space.
2. An Annual Renewal Fee is required to maintain ownership of the planting. The Annual Renewal Fee is $10.00 per year per tree. Failure to renew your application by June 1of any year will be interpreted by Grow Regina as cancellation and/or abandonment of planting.
3. To Adopt-A-Tree at a onetime cost of $50.00. Cost provides for registration, water, and mulch. Tree is provided.  Note: One application form is required for each tree space.

How do I find my garden plot location?

The new garden numbering system is based on the Saskatchewan Land Titles design. Each 40′x40′ section is located by the 1-11 and A-J (the letter I is not used to avoid confusion). Each 10′x10′ is represented by a number from 1-16. This numbering system will be permanent.
