Call for Volunteers
RE: FALL YARA-GRCG GENERAL CLEANUP
Dear Gardeners,
Weather wise, we have not had a great year. Never the less, we had a great year in the gardens and now we have to clean up and put away the garden for the coming winter. Lately, the weather has not been the least bit cooperative and everything is running late.
There is a lot of work to be done and we need a lot of help over the next two week.
- We will blow out all the water from the irrigation lines.
- All the hoses have to be disconnected, rolled up and put into the sheds.
- Taps turned on so the water can be blown out.
- The sheds need to be cleaned out and all non-Grow Regina items removed.
- All tools need to be cleaned and stored in the sheds.
- Several compost bins to be assembled and placed in the gardens.
- All garbage has to be removed from the garden site.
- All the weed piles left lying about have to be removed.
- All garden wastes has to be removed from the compost bins, shredded and put back in the bins.
- All garden waste is to be shredded, placed in the bins and a new compost pile to be built.
It is these last two items that will require the most volunteers and the most days to complete the job. We have a few gardeners who have been trained to operate the shredder. Our shredding schedule will be designed around their availability (weather permitting).
We will try to go every day except Sundays - with a morning and an afternoon shift.
The first eight task can be done in a day or two and will not require any great physical exertion. The shredding, does require some effort - mostly in wrestling wet plant material into the shredder, moving wheelbarrow loads about the garden and raking the shredded material into piles. It is going to be wet and muddy work. So, proper footwear and work gloves are needed. If you have earmuffs, bring them. The machine is noisy.
We have hopes of renting a second, larger capacity shredder, which will speed up the shredding. To justify the cost of renting we must have a commitment of volunteers. More on this when we know for sure.
For now, if you can help, please let me know the dates and the morning or afternoon you can be available. I will try and co-ordinate the daily work crews and keep you informed
of the schedules and any changes which may occur. Please reply to this email with your volunteer dates. We will be starting right away so you can be assigned your days just as soon as you reply.
Thank you from Grow Regina and the Garden Operations Committee
