Weed Control
On Sunday, August 2, several dedicated volunteers spent their afternoon battling the war on weeds in the pathways at YARA-Grow Regina Community Garden.
This was a group effort to help control the weeds in the 20 foot and 5 foot pathways; however, this goal will not be achieved without the constant and ongoing attention of each and every gardener to not only control the weeds in their garden plot, but to take responsible for controlling the weeds in the pathways near your garden.
Unfortunately, a few gardeners have neglected to make weeding a priority and have been contacted to clean up their garden or risk losing the privilege of gardening at YARA-Grow Regina Community Garden next year.
For those who need help to identify weeds common to Saskatchewan, please refer to the recently posted article on ‘Weeds Common to YARA-GRCG‘. Photos have been taken of every weed in the garden plus a few tree and shrub seedlings (ie manchurian elm and rosehip) that cause as much problems as weeds in a vegetable garden.
Volunteers will be meeting again on Sunday, August 23 at 1:00 pm near the St. Mark’s garden shed to coordinate another ‘weeding party’. Please join us to keep our garden looking its best.
The Garden Operations Committee is currently finalizing what is required for Fall Clean-Up and other activities including Composting Guidelines. You will learn more about this in the 2009 Fall Newsletter coming in September.
